A South Carolina boat builder is planning to build a new manufacturing facility for its line of premium yachts, state and company officials said.

Sportsman Boats Manufacturing said its Phenom Yachts subsidiary would invest about $12 million in its new factory outside of Charleston. The project is expected to create 149 jobs. Company officials said Phenom manufactures high-performance center console yachts with advanced manufacturing and materials for both deep-sea fishing and family activities.

Phenom President and CEO Tommy Hancock said the company aims to create a center console that is second to none. The support of the State of South Carolina helped bring the vision to life.

Officials expect to begin operations in Summerville, South Carolina, early next year.

The South Carolina Economic Development Board approved tax credits for job development to support the project. Details of the incentives were not disclosed. Founded in 2011, Sportsman claims to be the fastest growing line of center console and bay boats in the recreational boating market.
