Vivienne Westwood’s 80s & 90s Pearl Choker is Tiktok’s biggest trend

Nothing is as quaintly iconic as a peal accessory. The humble pearl has been a staple in jewelry boxes for centuries and has lived many lives in the fashion world.

Decorated as a necklace, bracelet, earrings or even as a hair ornament, there is not much pearl jewelry tilt to do. This is why its recent resurgence has crept so seamlessly into our everyday lives without even thinking about it.

Recently, you may have noticed that a particular pearl necklace was making the rounds on social media – so viral it has now been coined as the “TikTok Necklace”.

The individual design is the Bas Relief Choker by Vivienne Westwood with three rows of pearls stacked on top of each other, which are connected by Westwood’s encrusted Orb logo.

While the design itself was drafted in the late 1980s, its second heyday came with the support of several key celebrities – Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Bella Hadid, to name a few.

Dua sported the 2021 BRIT Awards style along with a bespoke corset mini dress designed by Vivienne Westwood.
Then there was Rihanna who was recently spotted wearing the style Shop at Wholefoods.

Always one who paves her own way in fashion, she combined the traditional jewelry with a baseball cap, low-rise jeans and a tweed blazer. Your usual outfit for grocery stores.

We can’t forget Bella Hadid, who wore the choker necklace on a trip in New York City with Kendall Jenner last year.

The 24-year-old model really embraced the retro energy by wearing an oversized leather jacket, ’90s sunglasses and a pink crochet hat.

Some may have called the look unconventional, but note her growing devotion to the rebellious trends of the 80s, 90s and early noughties and this outfit was just another day in life.

Call it what you will, but there’s no denying the pearl necklace trend blends some rebellion with tradition – an accomplishment that Gen Z’s zeitgeist are intimately familiar with. It’s also worth noting that Vivienne Westwood herself was a pioneer of the edgy, punk and untraditional silhouettes of the 90s.

Against this background, it is clear why the iconic styles from Westwood are experiencing a resurgence, especially among today’s It-Girls.

If, like Bella, Rihanna, Dua, and a dozen other TikTokker, you’d like to get your hands on your very own pearl necklace, shop for Vivienne Westwood’s own below, plus additional pearl necklace options selected by ELLE.
