The Craft Yarn Council’s virtual competition, The Great Yarn Challenge, brings together thousands of crafters from across the United States and Canada

TGYC champion wins with crochet cover for The Corner Laughters album Temescal Telegraph

Dallas, March 31, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — If you’ve ever wondered what a yarn crafting competition would look like, you’re in luck. The big yarn challenge (TGYC), a unique virtual yarn competition hosted by the Craft Yarn Council (CYC), launched this year, bringing together hundreds of crafters to compete for a chance to win enviable prizes and bragging rights.

TGYC participants not only found fun creating projects for the competition, but also the opportunity to push themselves and create things outside of their comfort zone. And perhaps no competitor pushed himself more than the TGYC champion Jennifer Kinyak. For her winning project, Kinyak submitted a crocheted artwork to serve as the album cover The corner laughs‘ latest album “Timisoara Telegraph.”

“Inspired by the imagery their lyrics evoke and what I know of their primary songwriter’s pursuits, I created this piece of art called ‘The Accepted Time’ after a song on the album,” said Kinyak. “I started working on the concept during the pandemic. I think a handcrafted album cover was ultimately appropriate for a pandemic album: it lends a warmth and coziness that was welcome during this time of fear and uncertainty.”

Karl Kane, lead singer of The Corner Laughers and longtime friend of Kinyak, expressed her excitement for her friend upon learning that Kinyak had won the Great Yarn Challenge. The two have known each other for years and Kinyak has illustrated album covers for the band. Kane approached Kinyak to design the cover for Temescal Telegraph and they discussed different directions they could take.

“When Jennifer agreed to do the album cover for Temescal Telegraph, we initially envisioned it would be an illustration, but eventually she suggested the idea of using crochet to create the cover, which I loved,” Kane said. “When I first saw the album cover – and every time I’ve looked at it since – I’m absolutely blown away by how beautiful it is and how well it reflects the imagery and feelings of the album.”

The winners of the Great Yarn Challenge were announced during a last week special closing ceremony on Instagram. All winners will receive special prizes from TGYC Sponsors and a unique yarn trophy from Sharp Sign Co. Kinyak also won one $1,000 Shopping spree for campaign sponsors’ products.

“I am proud and pleased that CYC selected a crocheted project for this award,” remarked Kinyak. “I love MANY yarn arts, but I’m particularly passionate about crocheting and sharing how beautiful, versatile and meaningful it can be. There have been so many beautiful and inspiring contributions on all topics at TGYC and this is a great and meaningful honor.”

The Craft Yarn Council (CYC), founded in 1981, is a not-for-profit trade association representing manufacturers and traders of yarns and tools used in knitting, crocheting and other crafts. The Craft Yarn Council’s mission is to nurture a community of yarn artisans by stimulating current knitters and crocheters, inspiring new yarn artisans, and initiating educational and promotional campaigns to ensure a healthy future for the yarn industry.
