Shawnee Senior Recreation – Shawnee News star

Shawnee Senior Rec Center

Good morning Shawnee! Here at the Senior Recreation Center at 401 N. Bell, we host a variety of creative groups for those age 55 and older. Our crochet collection of members gathers every Thursday afternoon at 1pm. Sue Smith has taught this crochet group for many years and she still drops by from time to time. The dedicated group of crochet enthusiasts enjoy a time of crochet, community and support. Others are welcome to join them!

Knitting is another activity where we meet people every Monday at 11:00 am. We are pleased to introduce Kathy Cowan who has volunteered to lead this group for several months. She gives knitting tips and helps beginners with the basic styles. In our craft room you will find many knitting supplies such as needles, yarn and patterns to help you get started. For details on knitting or crocheting please call us at 405-878-1528. We also have a very active group of quilters. This fun Just Quilters group meets every Wednesday morning at 9:00 am, usually complete with donuts, to work on projects together. They sometimes sell ready-made quilts and donate several items to charity each year. For more information on the senior quilting group or the additional quilting guild, Spinning Spools, please contact Lisa Hefner at 405-650-0216.

For more scheduled groups and programs, see our monthly activity calendar. You’ll find all of our fitness classes and daytime pickleball sessions, as well as Project Heart lunch menus, served at the Community Center, 804 S. Park. Project Heart can be reached at 405-275-4530.

Just a reminder that our new Loss and Bereavement Support Group meets on the third Monday of each month at 1:30pm, led by Chaplin Mike Whitehead of Valir Health. This group is for anyone who is going through a loss, no matter where they are on their grieving journey.

Our next Wellness Wednesday will be focused on hosting staff from The Grove on Union. They will be hosting an information desk with the latest updates on their new senior community on Wednesday, September 21, 9:00-11:30 am

Ms. Kerri Foster will be teaching a technology course entitled Photography on Your Phone. Join us on Wednesday 21 September at 13:30 and bring your mobile phone. She shares tips on how to use all your camera features so you can take fun photos of your grandkids. The class is free, but please register at the center’s front desk or by calling 405-878-1528.

Don’t forget that we started our Technology 101 dates this fall. These 30-minute time slots are free for those over 55, so reserve your spot now! The schedule is based on the availability of our staff and once you have an appointment you can bring your electronic device and questions so we can try to help you.

I will be teaching a new “Wellness 101 class” starting Thursday, September 29th from 11:15am to 11:45am. This 8 week course covers the core principles of wellbeing to empower you to make healthy choices. As with our other special programs for this course, register at the main desk or by calling 405-878-1528.

Each week, current seniors’ recreational events are featured by DJ Mike Askins on the Mike in the Morning radio show. The show airs Wednesday mornings at 8:35am on KGFF on 100.9 FM or 1450 AM on your radio choice. We appreciate Mike, KGFF and the CPN for their continued support!

Take care, stay safe and see you in the center!
