Second farmers market for Saturday

In her poem A New England Gardener Gets Personal, Maxine Kumin writes, “Kale/curls. Laughs at cold rain./ Survive/Crushing hail./Under snow, stays green./Comes crisp as a clapping/to bowl,/then lies down humbly/with salad and cabbage.”

The spring green is a delight. Planted early, lettuce, kale, mustard and kohlrabi, along with the crisp radish and spring onion, bring the earliest color, flavor, variety, crispness and nutrition to market and our tables. Mrs. Kumin gardened in Maine, which has an exceptionally short growing season. Plants that can survive the cold, hibernate and grow easily, including kale, are valued. All greens provide nutrients, but those in the cabbage family, which includes kale and turnips, provide extra blobs. And there are so many ways to enjoy those greens. Salad natural (a mix of freshly cut or shredded veggies), massaged kale (with olive oil, lemon, nuts and dried fruit), sautéed with onions/garlic, or paired with bean soups (so Mediterranean!). And unlike perennial asparagus and rhubarb, and quick-bitter spinach and lettuce, kale will survive summer and cold weather, too. A simple addition to any garden.

Thank you for a happy first day of the market last Saturday! And there’ll be even more joy when the market’s kids’ crafts return this week with an edible DIY birdhouse. Join Mrs. Debra in the Market Info Tent to build this fun bird feeder your birds will love!
