The fire that broke out on the top floor of Sungrace Fabrics Private Limited in Kaali Sadak, Ludhiana was first noticed around 5:30 a.m. by workers working the night shift
In the early hours of Sunday morning, a major fire broke out in a well-known fabric factory in town. Although there were no injuries, lakhs’ worth of cloth and machines were gutted.
The fire that broke out on the top floor of Sungrace Fabrics Private Limited in Kaali Sadak was first noticed around 5:30 a.m. by workers working the night shift. The workers immediately raised the alarm and called the fire department. The fire was extinguished after an intensive six-hour campaign.
14 fire engines were put into service for fire fighting. The vehicles had to do double laps to fill the tanks with water. Firefighters were also seen refilling the fire engines with water from other factories in the area. By noon the fire was completely extinguished. The top floor of the three-story building was completely destroyed, and the machines on the first floor were also damaged.
Lead firefighter Rajinder Kumar said the fire protection equipment at the factory was inadequate and although 14 fire engines were put into service, they had to be refilled repeatedly. “Fortunately, no one was injured,” he said, adding that the fire was caused by a short circuit.
Fabric mill owner Vimal Jain said the fabric stored on the top floor had turned to ashes while the heavy machinery was also damaged. Founded in 1994, Sungrace Fabrics is one of the leading exporters and manufacturers of fabrics.
