Knitting and crocheting helps people to be creative, productive and relaxed
When the pandemic hit and house bans rolled in, we faced the challenge of finding ways to entertain ourselves at home.
An activity that suits any location and almost any environment has proven to be an ideal hobby during the pandemic. While all was uncertain, this activity proved a constant for those who enjoyed it.
“It was incredibly busy in the few weeks leading up to the first lockdown with everyone fearing everything was going to shut down – people were panicking so anyone with a hobby like knitting or crocheting wanted to have plenty on hand as they knew he was going to be home,” said Chloe Rip, manager at True North Yarn Co. in Barri.
Luckily, they already had a fully operational online store, and Rip said they saw an immediate surge in orders. “We’ve received more orders than ever before in the last few years with handicrafts that fit the home so perfectly,” she said.
Rip said it’s a hobby that helps people be creative and stay productive while also relaxing, all elements that have proven incredibly beneficial during the pandemic. Whether you were a beginner or an experienced knitter or crocheter, these have been and continue to be ideal hobbies for anyone to pursue.
Social media is making knitting and crochet accessible and creating a resurgence in popularity
In the past, knitting and crocheting was passed down from an older family member to the younger generation. But today, Rip says, there’s been a resurgence of younger people engaging via social media and taking inspiration from popular trends.
“Maybe no one in their family knits, but they saw a tiktok of someone who made a Harry Styles sweater and they can teach themselves how to make it just based on free tutorials on YouTube,” Rip said.
She also said there is always new patterns being shared on Facebook and Pinterest, Tiktok and Instagram stories showcasing ongoing projects and finished items, and a plethora of knitting podcasts growing in popularity during the pandemic.
What you create is only limited by your imagination, whether you are a beginner or an experienced creator
Part of the appeal of this hobby is that it’s available to anyone of any skill level and the possibilities of what you want to create are endless – with so many patterns, yarns, fabrics, textures and colors at every price point.
“The potential is endless, you can buy a ball of yarn for $3.00 or go all the way from there and do a huge project with the chicest, finest, softest wool for hundreds of dollars, so it’s a very accessible hobby for.” She can cater for any budget and whatever you want to create,” Rip said.
Another attraction is the opportunity to do something very individual
“You have so much control over whatever you want to make, you can choose the thickness of the fabric, the style, the fit, the color, you can make it exactly how you want it and during that process you win a deep appreciation and understanding of what you want from a garment,” said Rip.
