Nestled on the sun-kissed shores of the Algarve, where rugged cliffs meet crystal clear waters, the New Western Algarve houses 134 guest rooms and 83 apartments. With every inch of the property designed by AB Concept, the intriguing design scheme blends the site’s stunning natural setting and rich Portuguese history with touches of the W brand’s signature style.
The destination’s mesmerizing, curving Benagil Caves inspired the flowing design of the hotel’s interiors, while the color palette of blue, aquamarine and turquoise references the azure sky and surrounding Atlantic Ocean. From fabrics and finishes to alluring textures, every detail of the hotel is intentional. Guests will discover expertly curated art and spectacular lighting, all telling the story of local traditions and heritage – from ceramics, mosaics and crochet work to Moorish costume, the destination’s fishing livelihood and surfing culture.
“We love creating expressive designs for both experiences and memories, creating both impactful first encounters and lasting impressions,” said AB Concept’s Ed Ng. “We are delighted to be working with W Hotels Worldwide to bring our shared vision of the W Algarve to life, combining the cultural nuances and local traditions of this beautiful region of Portugal with W Hotels’ inimitable flair for thoughtful, intriguing and imaginative design Hotel and Residences.”
Guests enter through an entrance inspired by an old local folklore tale, with a flowing curved wall adorned with infinity mirrors and handcrafted Portuguese ceramic plates by Vista Alegre, a Portuguese porcelain craft company that has been in existence for almost 200 years. Decorated in ethereal shades of green and blue and arranged in an abstract form, a mystical undersea feeling emanates as soon as guests step through the doors.
The theme continues in the energetic W Lounge, which features an intriguing wave centerpiece installation made of glass panels, taking inspiration from Moorish jewelry and oceanic bubbles. As one side of the W Lounge opens onto the terrace, the space is flooded with bright, natural light, creating an indoor-outdoor feel. Decorated with bespoke Moorish-inspired tiles, the glamorous bar features dramatic hand-blown glass lighting pendants, all accented by a 20-metre-long onyx counter that stretches from the indoor bar to the outdoor terrace.
Guestrooms all embrace clean maximalism. Opposites attract when natural tones and materials marry colour. Bespoke furniture and intricate local touches are found throughout, including delicate bedside lanterns, dramatic backlit headboards designed in a nod to nearby churches, mosaics made from authentic Algarvian ceramic tiles, and a crochet pattern that adorns the glass panel separating the bathroom from the bedroom , which are reflected on the bedroom floor when the light shines through. All rooms have balconies with stunning views over the gardens and the Atlantic Seaboard.
The 10 WOW Suites feature rooftop terraces with endless coastal views. The Extreme WOW suite is inspired by Moura Encantadas, the supernatural beings from Portuguese and Galician folklore. In true W style, embracing individuality and authenticity, guests are immersed the moment they enter the mirrored foyer. Outdoors, travelers can luxuriate on their private patio with dining table, lap pool and unparalleled sea views.
The WET Deck is the W brand’s signature on the poolside scene, offering guests a stylish spot to soak up the sun. Relaxed cabanas surround the curved edges of the cascading pools that mimic the coast. Additionally, the Market Kitchen restaurant was created with a neighborhood ambiance that draws inspiration from local markets, using traditional Calçada Portuguesa pattern paving, azulejos tiles and typical style windows. It will offer a relaxed, rustic vibe through the wooden floor, floor to ceiling tile detailing and louvered French doors opening onto the bright fountain garden, flooding the space with light. A tiled communal table in the center of the restaurant and seating at the counter complete the convivial atmosphere of this space.
The sister of the renowned Milanese restaurant, the Paper Moon is located on the hotel’s roof and offers panoramic views as far as the eye can see. Stylish and energetic, this is another seamless interior/exterior; The interiors are airy and light with French doors opening onto an expansive terrace where guests can enjoy the breathtaking views of the peninsula.
Moving from dining to wellness, the spacious AWAY Spa features six treatment rooms and a design inspired by local fishing decks. The spa also includes a wet area with a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool, as well as a covered outdoor relaxation area. The Beauty Bar — a relaxed, social space — is decorated in pastel tones and features the patterns of traditional Portuguese tiles, laid out in a mosaic on the ceiling.
