This Saturday, SUNY Jamestown Community College, in partnership with Dream It Do It WNY, is hosting Girls in Manufacturing Day from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Manufacturing Technology Institute campus.

Dream It Do It WNY Girls in Manufacturing Day invites girls ages 9-14 to learn more about manufacturing careers and education. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in experiential craft activities and hear from women in the community who hold leadership positions in the manufacturing industry.

“Manufacturing faces a skills gap and part of that is the under-representation of women in the industry,” explains Francine Rondenell, director of Chautauqua County Dream It Do It. “Getting girls interested in future careers is a priority to ensure the region’s manufacturers can attract, retain and develop women in qualified positions. Events like Girls in Manufacturing Day give young women and their parents the opportunity to learn hands-on what today’s manufacturing is all about.”

While women account for about 47% of total employment, they account for only about 30% of the 15.8 million manufacturing workforce. Only 1 in 4 manufacturing executives are women. Girls in Manufacturing Day is part of many programs led by Dream It Do It WNY to promote the importance of women in manufacturing.

“Events like Girls in Manufacturing help teenage girls explore the idea of manufacturing as a career,” notes Melissa Paduano, program manager for SUNY JCC’s human resource development. “Our college skilled worker programs are seeing an increase in female students, which in turn helps these girls see female representation in these male-dominated programs. The collaboration of these two efforts is so important to work towards equal representation in the industry.”

Girls attending this event are welcome to bring an adult to share the experience. For more information about this event or to register, email Francine Rondenell at [email protected]
