Everything comes on roses! No wait….STRAWBERRIES! While the strawberry full moon does not occur until June 14 (typically the last full moon of spring or the first of summer), this lunar name was used by many aborigines to “mark the maturation of the ‘June camp’.” Strawberries” (Farmers Almanac). June-bearing strawberries are likely to ripen further north in June. But ours are ripening now… the first ones were available on the market last Saturday and more will be available in the next few weeks (timing and quantity will depend on temperatures and sunshine of course).
Strawberries in season are such a treat; They can of course be preserved (frozen fresh, jams) but it’s wonderful to have just enough to eat fresh, slice and eat with shortcrust pastry and cream or alone or combined with rhubarb for a tart. Several vendors had freshly picked berries last week, but they didn’t last long. But for this coming Saturday, as well as the next, the Fayette County Farmers Market will be celebrating “Strawberry Days”. Our local strawberry vendors will not only sell fresh strawberries, but other vendors may offer “specials” on their products and “all things strawberries”.
Two special events are planned for this festive Saturday. David Huffman and the Bluegrass Ramblers will perform from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. This week’s children’s activity at the market will be a fun scavenger hunt full of healthy tips. To start and end the scavenger hunt, contact Mrs. Debra in the Market Info Tent. Entrants “win” a game of marbles to pick up at the Katrina’s Greens & Greenery booth.
The market is open Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and is located in the municipal parking lot at the corner of South Main Street and East East Street in Washington, CH. SNAP EBT Food Benefit Cards and Credit/Debit Cards are accepted. Those who use the SNAP EBT card for grocery purchases will receive matching dollar “Produce Perks” tokens ($1 for $1) that apply only to fruit, veg, and food-producing crops. So “buy one, get one” for up to $25 EVERY market day. Five Dollar Coupons Will Again Be Available to Members of the FAYETTE COUNTY Farm Bureau at Every Saturday Market; These can be spent on both the Wednesday and Saturday markets.
