9 ways to add “Grandmillennial style” to your wardrobe

When you think of summer style, it’s no secret that this year’s breakout trend is “coastal grandmother.” We’ve seen the preppy look defined by its white linen pants and breezy blouse take over social media – but have you heard of the “Grandmillennial”?

Don’t worry if you haven’t, Byrdie Editor-in-Chief Hallie Gould stopped by TODAY at hour 3 to break down the trend inspired by our grandmothers. According to Gould, the grand millennial resembles the grandmother on the coast, although she doesn’t focus on breezy neutral colors, but rather a combination of vintage-inspired clothing with crocheted sweaters, long dresses, colorful patterns and decorative buttons.

Gould shares that both trends have breezy fabrics that mix and match easily, so you can take on the look individually or mix and match with your seaside grandmother’s favorites. Read on to see how you can wear the grand millennial trend this summer, from linen dresses to headscarves.

Grandmillennial style must-haves

Aqua crocheted cardigan

Gould says crochet is the best granny style, and it made a comeback as many people took up the hobby during the pandemic. This vintage-inspired cardigan is crocheted and made from 100% cotton.

“This cardigan is perfect for the warmer months. It’s colorful, breezy, and you can wear it alone or over a tank top or dress,” Gould said.

Montserrat The Madrid earrings

“Pearls are no longer stuffy or overly formal, and the gemstone is bang on trend this summer,” Gould said. “These earrings are an easy way to add them to your wardrobe.” According to the brand, the earrings are set with freshwater pearls, making each piece unique.

Draper James Kimberly smocked midi dress

Gould loves this airy ruffle dress that features a floral and colorful pattern. She says it’s an easy piece to wear with sneakers for the day or dress up with wedges for the evening.

La Regale raffia mini bag with top handle

“This woven top-handle bag is the perfect balance of ‘beachy chill’ and structure. Raffia is always a trend for the beach, but it’s time to take the fabric everywhere,” Gould said. This chic wallet features an inner lining and a pocket for your important cards.

Storets Adly oversized shirt

Gould says this oversized shirt is a perfect seaside granny piece. Available in a classic neutral shade or bright orange, you can pair it with your favorite linen trousers or wear it as a beach cover up.

Greta Daisy Tank series

For a twist on the crochet style, this adorable tank top is one of a kind. According to the brand, it’s made to order and reconstructed from recycled crochet blankets. The brand warns that this top can take up to three weeks to manufacture and ship as it is a custom order.

The Everlane Linen Way-High Drape Pant

If you’re already a seaside grandmother fan, you know this is a wardrobe staple. These breezy, draped pants come in three different earthy colors and are made from 100 percent linen, according to the brand.

100% European linen button-down Quince dress

“If you need something even more breezy, this white linen dress is it,” Gould said. According to the brand, this button-down dress with a tie waist is made from 100% linen and you can now snag it with a 73% discount.

Frankie’s bikini Heidi headscarf

Gould loves headscarves because there are so many different ways to wear them. Available in classic tan or bright summer colors, this scarf is made from lightweight 100% polyester.

“Go to grandma’s and protect your hair from the wind by wrapping it over your full head or folding it up and wearing it as a headband,” says Gould.
